Grandmother Spider and the Web of Creation is a one-of-a-kind hanging sculpture handcrafted by featured Chameleon Rose artisan Ahzriel Addams.
At the heart of the web rests an elaborately beaded spider in deep purple, black, and silver. Her ornate body combines swirling metalwork, rhinestones, glass beads, and carefully constructed legs. Around her, Ahzriel has formed an intricate circular web from purple jewelry wire, seed beads, bugle beads, and shimmering accents. Beaded drops extend beneath the web, adding movement and catching the light.
Spider figures carry distinct teachings within several Indigenous cultures:
Hopi tradition: Spider Grandmother is associated with creation, guidance, and the creative gifts that help humanity flourish.
Diné tradition: Spider Woman shared the knowledge of weaving with the Diné, teaching the skill through which patience, beauty, and order take form.
Cherokee tradition: When one side of the world remained in darkness, Grandmother Spider spun a web to the land of light, placed the sun in a clay vessel, and carried it home, bringing light and warmth to the people.
Ahzriel’s contemporary interpretation draws inspiration from these related yet culturally distinct stories. The encircling web evokes the living pattern of existence, with every strand contributing to a greater whole and every life holding its place within creation.
