Understanding Angel, Oracle and Tarot Cards

tarot cards

There are many different types of cards that can help you with your spiritual journey. You may already be familiar with some of them, or maybe you landed on this post today because you want to learn more. The use of cards to learn more about yourself, your karmic standing, messages from your guides or to seek answers to the questions you have about life and the beyond has been around for ages. While we are seeing cards more in mainstream society today, the practice and tradition is not new at all.

There are three different forms of cards: angel, oracle, and Tarot. There are more differences between these types of cards than just their names or how they look. Let’s take a look at them below to help you decide which cards are best for you.

Angel, Oracle, and Tarot: What’s the Difference?

If you’ve seen these card decks around, you may be asking yourself, what’s the difference? This is a common question to people new to cards. There are so many options, so many beautiful decks, and with so many different names, themes, and designs, that it can all seem confusing. However, the cards are meant to help you bring clarity to your life, not more confusion. Hopefully this post will help you break it down and gain a better understanding of the types of cards and how they can benefit you.

Also keep in mind that the types of cards can be used for different things at different times. And you might change your preferences over time as well. This is normal and even encouraged!

Angel Cards

Angel cards are great for spiritual users who believe in a higher being or higher powers. If you have the sense that we are not alone in the world, or that you are being looked over by angels, spirits, God, or a higher power outside of this realm, then you may want to try angel cards.

Angel decks are also often considered “beginner” decks. This doesn’t mean that only beginners can use them. It just means that if you are new to card reading, this can be a great place to start. Once you get really comfortable with your angel cards and using them regularly, you may try oracle cards and also Tarot. But people of all experience levels and time using cards can and do use angel cards.

Keep in mind that there are many different types of angel cards and if one deck doesn’t resonate with you, it’s okay. That doesn’t mean the deck is “bad” or that you are not meant to work with angel cards. It may just mean that you need to try a different deck of cards. If you ever experience a strong pull or desire to acquire a specific deck, then that’s the one you should go for. It’s calling to you.

Oracle Cards

With Oracle cards, you have more freedom than with some other cards. They are typically used for astrology, spiritual guidance, life storytelling, and divination. Some people pull a card or cards each day as guidance for that day, or for the week, to uplift them or to guide them on a specific area of life such as money, love, or even for balancing their energy or chakras.

Angel decks are specifically a type of oracle cards, but because it is such a large subcategory, it’s often listed as a category of its own.

Tarot Cards

Tarot is quite different from oracle cards in several ways. They are the most common form of card reading and they’ve been around for centuries. They were originally based on the 52-card deck of playing cards. They are as famous and popular for the artwork depicted on them as they are for how they are used in divination.

You can now find Tarot decks in a variety of designs, themes, and styles, especially as they have become more popular. The standard deck will have a total of 78 cards. 22 of these cards are called the Major Arcana and the other 56 are the Minor Arcana.

The Minor Arcana are divided into suits: Swords, Cups, Pentacles, and Wands. Each suit also has four Court cards: Paige, Knight, King, and Queen.

There are a variety of spreads to learn with Tarot to give you different types of readings. Different spreads use different numbers of cards and can give you anything from a yes or no answer to an important question, to a full 12-month forecast of your life. Some practitioners spend their entire lives studying the Tarot.

How to Choose the Cards for You

Now that you know more about them, you may be wondering which type of cards are best for you. First, you can definitely use all three. Many people do, and they can be used for different purposes. Oracle cards have fewer “rules” and they can be used on the fly, with people who are newer to card reading, and when you just want a quick lift.

Tarot decks may have different designs on the cards, but the cards themselves will be the same and follow the same format and are used in the same way. Some people feel overwhelmed by Tarot in the beginning because there are so many cards to learn and rules. Just take your time and practice and study and you will get the hang of it over time. There are also “learning” decks that teach you while you practice.

However, oracle cards can vary widely in how they are used, based on the theme of the deck. There are cards for spirit animals, numerology, chakras, daily meditations, dragons, fairies, crystals and stones, and just about anything else you can think of. These will come with a guidebook that tells you how to use that specific deck.

Summing It All Up

Over time, you may decide that you prefer a specific type of card deck over the other, or maybe you’ll enjoy all three and use them as you feel called to in different situations. The beauty of seeking the cards for help in your life is that you can go where you are guided.

If you’re unsure what cards to choose for yourself, you can use other spiritual tools to help you decide such as meditation, a pendulum, or crystals. If you feel called to a deck, it’s probably meant for you.
